Homemade Dinner Rolls Made With Wheat & Honey
Homemade dinner rolls made by hand always taste better. Fact. This yummy upgrade made with wheat flour and honey comes together in about 3 hours and is perfect for the holiday table. I decorated mine with a few simple garden ingredients and a dash of pink peppercorns, which we can forage outside our doorstep!
I first tried these dinner rolls with all-purpose flour for Thanksgiving and they were PERFECTION! This wheat version has no sugar, making it a great trade-off and giving more earthy vibes for dinner. Considering we will have prime rib and pasta to accompany, the honey wheat dinner roll was a good choice for us. It’s all about balance!
To make these yummy and wholesome homemade dinner rolls, I have the scoop for you below. A couple of tips – let these wheat rolls rise a little longer than those made with white flour – they are more dense for sure. Also, if you want a really evenly shaped roll, you should roll out each piece and fold it into a ball, then round it out with your hands, placing it seam-side down.
INGREDIENTS:
1 cup whole milk warmed
2 1/4 active dry yeast
2 Tablespoons honey split
1 large egg
1/4 cup butter room temp
1 teaspoon salt
3 cups whole wheat flour (AP flour makes these so fluffy and amazing too!)
More butter for drizzling and Malden salt for sprinkling
METHOD:
Combine milk, honey, and yeast. Let sit for about 5 mins covered.
Next add in egg, salt, butter, 1 cup flour. You can mix this in a stand mixer or by hand with a dough hook. Once combined, add the rest of the flour. The dough should be coming away from the sides of the bowl when ready.
Turn out onto a floured surface and knead for 3-4 mins.
Place in a greased bowl, greasing the dough in it first, then let rise on the counter 1-2 hours. Punch down the dough and pull apart 12-14 rolls. Shape and place in greased 9×11 and let rise again under a cloth on the counter for about an hour.
Set oven to 350° and while it heats, butter buns and decorate them. I used my garden parsley, rosemary, and pink peppercorns.
Pop into oven on a low rack for about 20-25 mins, rotating halfway.
Once done, drizzle butter and salt, and enjoy!
I hope you love these homemade dinner rolls as much as we do – they’re so good hot out of the oven or reheated the next day!
