Planting Garlic: How To Do It Well
You could 100% use random garlic cloves that are loose in your fruit bowl from an old clove of grocery store garlic, plop them into soil and watch it grow. You really could do that.
However, if you want to go all in for your garlic, and grow some spectacular bulbs, here is the intel you need.
This is a mash up of advice from my Aunty Pammy and Martha Stewart, who are basically the same person, so it’s GOLD.
How to plant garlic:
- Separate your cloves gently, so as not to puncture or peel any of them
- Place cloves into a container (I had 4 bulbs worth of cloves) with 1/3 cup vodka and 1 tablespoon of baking soda for 10 minutes. (Of all the steps, this step is the most optional).
Strain out the cloves and add in 1 tablespoon of liquid fish emulsion. Fill the container up the rest of the way with water and let sit overnight. Just one night.
- Strain cloves again, and plant 2” deep, but 12” apart.
Water regularly and wait about 7-8 months until the stems start to turn brown
Growing garlic is an easy process, though a bit involved. I am trying all approaches (zero fertilizer, just fish emulsion, and the vodka fish combo) to see what works best. I’ll report back asap!
