Deciding on Raised Garden Beds: A Round Up

Deciding on which style of raised garden beds we wanted for our remodel sent me into gather-all-the-inspiration-mode, searching for the perfect fit for our style. There are many many shapes, heights, and materials that come into play when looking at raised beds, and I have some of my favorites here.

Honestly, you could even make your own beds out of cinderblocks, and my husband and I have made our own wooden raised garden beds too. Right now, lumber prices are through the roof, and many of these options are much cheaper and faster because the companies already have the inventory before the world went crazy.

Building a garden is much like building a home – a dream. But, don’t let costs and “this is too hard” stop you. My parents grow their veggies all in bags, repurposed water troughs, and found items their friends have given them.

If you are looking to purchase a raised bed, I have sourced some fantastic styles for you – some are even off Amazon!

What to look for in a Raised Garden Bed

There are a few elements to really consider with raised beds. Nowadays they’re readily available on Amazon, at nurseries, custom-made, or even from online retailers. It’s all a matter of preference.

Here are four things to think about with your garden beds:

  1. Depth. I like 18″ deep beds because you get the combo of good looking beds and a lot of soil depth. However, some people like even taller beds so that they don’t have to bed down much. They can be upwards of even three feet high!
  2. Materials. There are aluminum, plastic, wood, steel, and lord knows what else when it comes to raised beds. Think about how long you want your beds to last, and go from there. With wooden beds, redwood lasts the longest because it’s most rot resistant. Cedar is next best, then pine. With any metals, just think about rust. With platic think about BPAs and toxins.
  3. Length and width. How tall you are will again play a part. I’m 5’9″, so I like beds that are four feet wide at the most, with either six or eight feet going the other direction.
  4. Look. The overall beauty of your beds is all a matter of opinion. I love the potager style wooden beds with caps on them for sitting, but also think a steel bed is very chic. My parents plant a ton in containers because they love a more loose vibe.

Here are a few choices I have, and why I like them. Mainly you get a variety of prices and looks. They are all easy to assemble as well!

Pine 4’x4′ Bed, $73.99

Under $100 and so easy, plus cute! This is a great beginner option. Pine is faster to decay as a type of wood though, so just keep that in mind. However, they say that if you follow square foot gardening, you only need four of these per person to grow all your own veggies!

Vego Aluzinc Modular Box, $159.95

I really like this company for metal beds. They have a great and easy product that looks nice and is really affordable. There are a ton of color options, sizes, and heights.

Copper Top Raised Beds, $175.00- $235

The copper detail on these beds is so pretty – I almost bought these for our garden! They were a close second to custom beds. I just adore the copper and also the wooden corner brackets.

Corten Steel Beds, $315

This steel vibe is so cool, and very versatile. For someone who wants an elevated look, this is it. Modernizes your garden, unifies it, and is resistant to the elements.

Funnel Design Raised Bed, $229.99

If you have critters as an issue, these beds are fantastic, plus I love the vintage look. This is very trough meets potager, and I think can make a great garden for anyone with trouble bending down or knealing. I also love these raised beds below windows to add visual interest.

Deep Root Cedar Raised Bed Kit, $234.86

A basic wooden raised garden bed for you. This is a nice clean look, sturdy, and easy to make. There is something to be said for a classic, tried and true raised bed.

Herb Garden Planter, $69.99

These herb planters are fantastic for space limitations and an orderly appearance. THe bottom shelf is useful as well, and adds a cute touch. One of my first raised beds was just like this!

I hope we have some great raised bed ideas in here for you, and if you want more inspiration I have some HERE (my 9 favorite styles of raised garden bed), as well as a fun garden design quiz HERE to help you determine your own garden design style!

Bold move, right? One of my girlfriends told me to do this and raved about the benefits (she always knows the good stuff - she’s that girl). But, I did some research too.

One clove of raw garlic a day has myriad health benefits. Yes it has to be raw. You cut it and let it sit out a minute so the allacin can form which is the healing component in garlic. Then just take with water.

It’s not just amazing for cooking, but also repairing us from the inside out and boosting immunity.

So, are you game for a clove a day?? I know, it seems cringey but you don’t even taste it - the upside is just too good!

I took this advice seriously 🌸

But “for real life” as my four-year-old says, the more I focused on turning my life into a heaven on earth, creating happiness with my own hands, the more I just felt so at home with myself.

Growing food is so poetic to me (as you can probably tell) because it truly takes our hands and fills our hearts - our lives - with joy, resilience, and confidence.

It’s also fun to see progress! This started out as an in-ground garden and has evolved immensely.

This is MY list of top 4 must-know things. It doesn’t have to be yours. But after years of guiding people through hardiness zones 3 through 10, I can tell you there’s a difference in each one when it comes to timing and temperament.

And then your very own microclimate will determine a ton. This is a personal thing that no one can really deeply help you with. Not even your neighbor. Every outdoor space has nooks and crannies that behave uniquely. And altitude and valleys and hillsides and salty ocean air versus humid tropical air, etc etc will determine a lot. So just pay attention. Be curious.

Then we need to know the purpose of it all. Mine mixes function, health, beauty, and adding magic to my children’s lives all wrapped up in one.

Of course then the sun you get is crucial. We all dance around the fireball in this crazy solar system, and we can’t change our positioning to it.

The list goes on, but this is where I start.

Turns out I just needed to let what I had be enough.

Many of you have watched this journey unfold from day one. I am so grateful to have gotten to prove to myself and others that you can make whatever you have, bring joy and connection and contentment.

Along the way you may just uncover a passion, career, purpose, and dreams that you never realize would come to manifest.

If you have ANY garden limitations, share them here. We’ll troubleshoot ‘em together!
