Fall Garden Plans 2019
This season is going to be my most aggressive, most planned out, most seeds direct-sowed and started season.
No pressure.
Here is my lineup:
- Fava beans
- Carrots
- Lettuce
- Peas
- Brussels
- Shallot
- Rainbow Chard
- Beets
- Spinach
- Arugula
- Marigolds
- Violas
- Nasturtium
What I’m most proud of is how many plants we can grow in such a small space. I have two 4ftx8ft beds – that’s it! I work on maximizing what we have, have put in a trellis for our peas to grow up, and take a few things into account to try and ensure healthy plants.
Here’s what to consider when planning out your beds:
- Crop rotation. Be sure you are mixing things around so the soil stays nourished and isn’t have the same plants pull the same nutrients.
- Companion planing. All plants need certain nutrients to thrive, and other plants being nearby can help or hinder. Be sure to do your research on this.
- Sun and shade. Be sure you’re getting the right amount of sun and shade for your plants. This is crucial for healthy plants.
- How much do you want to eat? Think about the yield of a plant and how many to buy. I bought 12 Brussel’s Sprout plants this year because you need quite a bit of the sprouts to make a meal.
If there was just one thing I would grow this season, it’s lettuce. I love butter lettuce, and it just grows and grows forever if you harvest it right. You can cut the whole top off, and it will regrow, but trimming the outer leaves instead and leaving the center ensures a ton of growth all season.
Happy planting my loves!
