Keeping A Garden Journal
I’m just a fool for a blank journal. Everytime I have to pack for a move, I find at least five empty and gorgeous journals waiting for me. I could even be considered a collector (hoarder?)… but that’s a story for another day.
One of my favorite gardening tools is my journal. I have a separate notebook dedicated just to the garden that I can reference as each planting season turns to help with planning and prep. Plus, it’s a fun creative outlet and really helps me celebrate the changing rhythms of the year.
In my garden journal I track these things:
- What I plant (I have a detailed post on how I decide that here)
- Where I plant it
- Date of planting
- The weather on that date
- Watering schedule
- Moon phase/ astrological phase on that date
- What preparation/ upkeep I did to the beds
- What I harvest and when
- How much I harvest & what I do with it
- Pests I encounter
- How the plants do over time
- Great seasonal recipes
If this seems like it’s too much, I would just focus on 1-5 of this list. It’s really about tracking what you did and where you put it/ did it do well? I like to be super detailed because it helps me remember my best practices, and gives me inspiration season to season.
I also journal in pen and colored pencil, which is a bit impractical, but it’s what I do. It’s all about what’s fun and easy for you, and what is actually doable. I often set out to make this elaborate journal entry and then am just scribbling where things loosely went and the general date. That’s OK too!
Happy journaling!
