How To Decide What To Plant In Your Garden

This is one of my favorite things about gardening, because it’s kind of like shopping and party planning mixed together, but way WAY cheaper. If you feel a bit overwhelmed by the “what to plant” question, I use a three part approach to planning out what goes in my garden. It’s very simple: what can I eat, try, and cut?

Eat: what does your family love the most? Our is broccoli, onion, spinach, strawberries, tomatoes, basil, kale, etc. So each season I see what is viable to plant and then work off my grocery list.

Try: what is calling out to you to experiment with? For us this season it will be eggplant and beets, because I wanted to eat more of them and they’re pretty and I think I can sneak them into my toddler’s food. But sometimes I legitimately choose things based on how pretty they are or how easy they are to grow.

Cut: I always like to have some flowers for cutting and putting on the dining table or gifting to a friend. The blooms also promote pollination and healthy bee populations. This is a super bonus if you’re bee-obsessed like I am, and like all good gardeners are, which means you now are bee obsessed too. You’ll draw in butterflies and the overall pop of beauty and color will make you smile. Promise.

Like I said, it’s really simple, but gives enough guidance to keep you on track. I also try to get enough of each plant that we can share the bounty and eat it throughout the season, not just once.

Lastly, be sure to reference what grows well in your hardiness zone, as some varieties of plant may or may not be conducive to your climate.

Happy planning friends!

Perhaps they’ll look back and giggle together about how mom made them sing a song to an Elderberry bush as a gift of reciprocity when we had nothing else.

Or maybe they’ll long for the sweet days with sticky hands from pulling needles off rosemary stems, and returning worms to their dirt homes.

Maybe they’ll resent how much they “had to garden” as teenagers, rediscovering it a decade later, much like my own journey.

No matter the destination, the moments when we’re out adventuring together talking about wild fennel and cactus flowers, treasuring the perfect-heighted walking stick and a Turkey vulture feather - those are the moments when my soul sighs with contentment and I know that I have done enough.

Making final moves💧Got the last piece for my bed irrigation today!

Why water with soaker hoses, you ask? I’ll tell you.

They’re flexible, moveable, controllable, and hide well.

I love hand watering too, but this is much more of a long term and steady choice.

Linked in stories and highlights AND on the blog for you. But bookmark this puppy so you don’t forget. These are Linex brand.

I’ve used them before (hence these photos) and with clients! Love love.

I’m so proud of the pledges that I’ve made. Going out on a limb for the environment, is never a mistake.

And in the journey for safer, cleaner, better, I’ve found amazing people on a similar mission.

#ad @growbughut is a company that creates nutrients (like vitamins) for plants. They actually found a way to give our plants and soil antioxidants and good bacteria to help our plants actually uptake the nutrients they need (like nitrogen and phosphorus).

Not a fertilizer. Not toxic. Safe for kids and pets! Safe for planet earth.

Nobody prepares you for what the destination of doing *what you love* and being present with *who you love* is like.

I thought “finding my passion” or uncovering my calling was the hard part.

No no. It’s managing life in the always wobbly balance of wanting to do many things fully and focused all at once.

It’s the biggest treasure of my life, this grappling. But it’s still a tango of dips and marches, some graceful, some stomach lurching. A beautiful dance nonetheless.
